Plot
Decades after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence find themselves once again as martial arts rivals. The crew behind Cobra Kai went through the studio vault and found a bunch of previously unseen footage that they were able to incorporate into the series using flashbacks. Ralph Macchio told Uproxx that there are three brand new angles of the famous crane kick 39, and his tombstone name is a continuity error, considering that in Karate Kid 4 (1994) his name is listed as Keisuke, but it was actually shown on the sign Chozen held in Karate Kid 2 (1986) to be Nariyoshi.

However, another interesting fact is that the name given in Karate Kid Part II was not the original name given to Miyagi. In The Karate Kid (1984), Miyagi’s dog tags attached to the keys to the 1948 Ford that Daniel was given for his birthday briefly show Miyagi’s name as Hideo in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: Anthony Mackie/Ralph Macchio/Kiri Shabazz (2018). That’s what we need from shows to take unique and interesting angles.
No longer the one-dimensional ‘good vs
Cobra Kai flips the script and gives us the perspective of Johnny Lawrence. He’s the one who lost and turns out to be a real person with very real flaws. Cobra Kai intrigues us with its great storytelling.
evil’ story that we’ve all been told a million times
It represents the ‘loser’ of the unforgettable 1984 film The Karate Kid, and it’s set 34 years later. Because of this narrative and twist, I find Johnny to be an inspiring figure who is trying his best to rebuild his life. Johnny is a very down to earth and simple character and he makes the most of the hands he’s given, isn’t that how we live our lives?
Top marks for a great performance
In a funny way, we sometimes see arrogance and attitude from Daniel LaRusso, who was originally the hero.
