Kevin Costner is a patriarch who runs a dynastic ranch the size of several countries. His way of life is being encroached upon by resort developers, tribal rights, and the power of the state of Montana. Reminiscent of Rock Hudson in «Giant,» he struggles to stick to the old ways.
Costner seems to fill his character’s shoes naturally
«Yellowstone» moves quickly with little introduction, but its story unfolds at the natural rhythm of a day in the desert, pausing between tribal rituals, cowboy gatherings, and political machinations. It’s a vast enterprise that weaves together law and justice, family, and friendship. He’s a world-weary man who’s seen too much and lied too often.
The land and family are his blood
He hears footsteps approaching him, but he can only play the part out of habit and loyalty. While some of the action is a little confusing due to the lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting a real slice of life, a glimpse into another world. I hope the resolution of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail.
